The use of lighting in Interior Photography

Lighting along with other elements can influence the quality of a photograph. It is our aim at ZAC and ZAC to create natural looking imagery that truly represents a space and its design. We believe in using photographic flashlight sparsely and rely mainly on natural daylight and artificial mood lighting to best exhibit the unique design of a space. Using artificial lighting, such as lampshades and fireplaces, provides mood and drama to a scene and allows us to connect the viewer to an image and recreate how it might feel to be in that space. Below we have created a video showing the result of light being used correctly to enhance an interior photograph.

Photographing Interior Design Showrooms

As we are both great admirers of good quality design and well made products it has been very satisfying to photograph luxury furniture within some of the best design showrooms in Edinburgh, London, Milan and Copenhagen.

Instead of photographing an overview shot of the entire showroom, we focus on specific design vignettes for a more aesthetically pleasing set of interior photographs that work well both together as a set, and individually on their own. If we were to capture the showroom as a whole we would be mixing design styles, revealing too much of the showroom’s outer shell which in turn would detract from the design sets, leaving little to the imagination.

Dezeen Feature

After recently completing a photoshoot in Instrmnt’s newly opened flagship store in Glasgow, seeing our images displayed in an online Dezeen article is certainly a nice start to the new year. Instrmnt product’s are minimalistic and stylish, so as an interior photographer the brief was to keep the images bright, airy, minimal and geometric.
